Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach is honored to receive a $10,000 grant from the Florida Blue Foundation. This grant will support our Immigration Legal Services program, enabling us to continue our vital work in assisting Haitian immigrants as they navigate the complex process of applying for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
Empowering Our Immigrant Community
At Catholic Charities, we believe that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves the opportunity to live in safety and with dignity. For many immigrants facing instability and uncertainty, TPS offers a lifeline—a chance to remain in the United States temporarily, free from the dangers of returning to a country experiencing armed conflict, natural disaster, or other extraordinary conditions. The current civil unrest in Haiti has led to the latest designation for Haitian nationals residing in the United States since on or before November 6, 2022. The registration period for those applying under this designation expires on August 3, 2024.
The process of applying for TPS is often daunting and complicated. It requires navigating a labyrinth of legal requirements, paperwork, and deadlines. Many immigrants, especially those with limited resources or language barriers, struggle to secure the legal assistance they need to successfully apply.
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach, Immigration Legal Services Program, will provide legal assistance with 100 Applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian Nationals, to be filed prior to the August 3, 2024, deadline.
Under the supervision of experienced immigration attorneys, applicants will be screened for TPS eligibility such as nationality, continuous residence, and physical presence, as well as for any disqualifying factors. For example, a person is not eligible for temporary protected status if he or she:
- Has been convicted of any felony or two or more misdemeanors committed in the United States,
- Is a person who ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in the persecution of any person on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, or is otherwise subject to one of the bars to asylum, or
- Is subject to one of several criminal-related or terrorism-related grounds of inadmissibility for which a waiver is not available, or
- Has been firmly resettled in another country other than the country of TPS designation.
Catholic Charities will provide legal support at four (4) TPS Workshops scheduled at Florida Blue Center/Palm Beach.
